Earth Day is a special day that celebrates this great planet we live on and need to care for and for my children that means we’re having a party! And why not is what I say? Before we drag out the kazoo’s and get all wild and crazy it’s important to know the history behind this special day.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency:

“Earth Day was born on April 22, 1970 in San Francisco, California. Every year, America and over 100 different countries join together in the celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd.”

Like I said, my children like to celebrate and whoop it up so in honor of the Mother Nature I find it fitting to throw a mini-party with Eco-friendly fun.

Here are 3 simple ways you can celebrate Earth Day with your children and make this day extraordinary:

  1.  Write a song. We can’t really sing “Happy Birthday” but we can make up our own Earth Day song or rap! For inspiration listen to some fun tunes from Kids for Saving the Earth. They have all sorts of fun ideas!
  2. Play a Game {or two}.  All good parties have games so why not on Earth Day? Grab gloves, garbage bags and head out for a walk to see who can pick up the most trash! The person who fills their bag first wins! It’s highly advisable to explain to children that they may not pick up sharp objects or glass! Trash pickers are available for purchase at a low cost and children often have fun using these tools to collect trash, if a budget is available!  If it’s rainy try PBS for some fun earth friendly computer games that will make everyone laugh, think and become inspired to recycle, reuse and grow!
  3. Earth Day Snack. What party isn’t complete without a snack? For Earth Day try making a snack that is healthy and comes from the earth. Try making yummy apple chips with the kids. Just slice your apple very thinly and have the children mix 2 teaspoons of sugar and cinnamon together to sprinkle on top of the sliced apples.  Bake on a coated pan for one hour at 275 degrees.  The house will smell yummy and the children will have a wholesome and delicious treat in honor of Mother Earth! For some not necessarily nourishing snacks but certainly themed check out Family Fun!
