Pets for the Environment was started by Eddie, a mutt on a mission, when he found out about all the toxic chemicals in pets’ bodies. It’s a project of the Environmental Working Group (which is where I work, so yeah, I’m being a little self-promotional. But it really is a great resource!)

At the moment, Eddie’s working on a pet food expose. It’s pretty gruesome, from what I hear.

One “organic” puppy treat if you can do is have him eat/chew on horse hooves…. Farriers trim them, and they’re essentially thrown away. I remember all the barn dogs used to grab them and drag them off to chew on. Not bone so it won’t cause any digestion type problems… and you can probably get them for free, too!

And I’m with the suggestion of doing your own dogfood — rice and chicken or ground beef is so easy to make (and freeze) and portion out. I have many friends who do this for their dogs.
