It's a compelling story isn't it?! We visited the biobabes in Dearborn earlier this month - and they seem to be up to some highly innovative stuff. In fact, there's a wider story of the soy bean and it's association with the Ford Motor company, which stems right from 100 years ago with Henry Ford and the Model T, runs through the Model U concept vehicle and then to today and the work the bio babes are doing. You might be interested in our (admittedly, somewhat homemade!) video about it - which includes the biobabes, here:

Michigan and my state of Ohio have to be about the most economically depressed states in the whole country and ironically are right together. As you said all the factories and businesses are leaving and it makes it hard to live and work in either of these states. I can name at least 5 huge companies that have left the small city where I live even...all we have left is a popcorn factory, a Whirlpool (which just laid off 600 workers), and a WalMart. I worry for the future. :(

@Alison Thanks for giving a shout out to us Michigan people because unless you are here or have seen the decline...you just don't know. It's rough here. I'm in Northern Michigan where it is very rural and even worse. Factories are relocating and entire towns are out of work. I work with families who are suffering and so are their children.

I'm with you on hoping that the tides will change.

You know the U.S. auto industry has not been given the kudos it deserves. Many people here in California seem to only look to Toyota to give them their eco-car but Ford has really stepped up (and Chevy too, sorry).
But my comment is more about Michigan. My husband is from Michigan and his family still lives there. Just in the 14 years I have known them I have watched Michigan's people suffer at the hands of the auto industry, economy and the NFL Lions (the last one is a joke for Lions fans, sorry. My hubby is a fan still). Anyway, when I visit Michigan and realize how high their unemployement rate is yet see such a potential for industry there I hurt for that beautiful state and my family. I hope Ford can bring back some needed jobs and industry to the state and maybe Michigan can be touted as a green state.

This is awesome. I knew Ford was in pretty good shape but I never knew it had a group of green moms on its side. I can't wait to see what comes out of their lab after we've gotten soy foam seats in the car!
