The plastic containers no longer say #7... they say nothing. So, we're using unknown plastics and we don't even know if they are recyclable.

I have 8 month old twins and I use gerber baby food and the juice. I didnt even know about the # 7 plastic. My grandfather told me about it today. I had to do some research. What would you recommend using instead of gerber? I can't believe this. I will be calling the company to complain.

Imagine having to be exposed to two of the most toxic and dangerous transgenerational artifical estrogen supplements in our history, BPA and DES. Unfortunately it seems the chemical industry was successful in repackaging the artifical estrogen BPA as an ingredient in plastic resins. Fortunately the FDA was astute enough to stop DES from being as pervasive as BPA. Thank heavens.

#7 means "other." Layered plastics composed of more than one plastic type generally fall into "other" because they are not recyclable using any of the other six sorting codes.

We have confirmed with Gerber that their organic baby food containers are a mix of plastic types numbers 1 and 2 and because they are a mix, they are not recyclable under either such category and are given a number 7 code for recycling. See the ZReport on BPA for more information.

Many people are not aware of this but baby food in jars (including Earth's Best Organics) contain BPA in the inside of the metal lid. This was very frustrating news to me as a mom of a 6 month old who is about to start eating food.

I make some of my own and by Earths Best & Healthy Times baby foods which are both organic and served in glass jars (juice included).

This is a timely post btw -- just had this EXACT discussion with a few friends the other day. Gerber is TOTALLY missing the point that people who by ORGANIC care about things like PLASTIC. Silly silly Gerber. I haven't and I won't buy their food as long as it is in plastic and I have quite a few friends who'd agree. Fortunately, we have other options, including feeding our babes regular people food!

Thanks!

I did the make and freeze thing but often used jars when traveling or eating out. many baby food does still come in glass but i think people often like the convenience of the plastic when it is thrown in the diaper bag or wherever. i always used the earth's best brand-they sell a very wide variety (all in glass) at babies r us and often have sales when you buy a bunch. they also have infant cereal (whole grain so better than gerber!), snacks and drinks for older babies/toddlers. you can see a list of products and get some coupons at www.earthsbest.com i agree that we need to contact the companies and tell them how we feel but what better way to get our point across than to buy the brands that are organic and BPA free.
by the way, a great book if you are making your own baby food: Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron--it really is easy to do!!

Wow, I guess I'm lucky. I did the make and freeze thing for my wee ones, so I never had to buy baby food. For some reason, I thought they were still sold in the glass jars I used when nannying in college (does that date me?). That's quite frustrating when for every obstacle cleared, three more pop up! I'm past baby food, but I'll help on this one!
