Hello, just found this site today. My child is not even a year old and he is addicted to television. I didn't know babies could get addicted to tv! He was colicky since birth and I recorded a classical baby show for him, it calmed him down and he just loves it. I would put the tv on Nick Jr. when I watched tv because I didn't want him to see or hear adult things. Plus, it states it enhances preschoolers early literacy and interpersonal skills. So I would put that station on everyday thinking he was learning. He may well be, he is very vocal. but, he also is addicted and has that certain GLARE. Have any of you noticed that GLARE? It's a VOID in their eyes. It's almost like losing time. Adults do it also, I have done it numerous times now that I look back on it. It scared me and I am correcting the tv consumption.
My Husband & I have purchased 4 toys for our son & they are learning toys. He would rather play with my cell phone, the remote control, tissue, etc. I joke that we will be getting him a cardboard box for his 1st birthday.
I read yesterday children should only watch 1 hour of television a day! Would have liked that info 9 months ago! Hope everything works out for all of you :o) God Bless

This is the cutest thing ever! Everyone is talking about puppy cam, the new live streaming footage of puppies playing. What is it, your co-workers may ask. It's puppies on a camera, and it is darling! A California company

I think you are sooo right! I have the same problem with my kids...I do let them watch less tv (so lesser commercials, which I find they should NOT put on childrens tv!) and explain things, but it is so hard, when the other kids at school...etc etc! excellent blog! I go snoop around a bit more!

My kids have so many toys that 90% of them never get played with because the kids have no idea they even exist. The clutter was driving me mad so I decided to cycle toys through our playroom. By this I mean I remove about 75% of the toys leaving only a chosen few and the rest are stored in the attic. Then, every month or so, I cycle in some of the toys from the attic and move the ones from the playroom into the attic. It's great because it cuts the clutter and makes old toys seem fresh and new in my kid's eyes. They get so excited to see toys they've forgotten they still had. It's great too because now every toy finally gets played with.

Cheers,
Sarah

Thanks for sharing your experience Sommer - it's great to hear it 'in person' via video! I have the same issues with my kids. The latest struggle is that my oldest (8 years old) wants a DS or some type of video game system. More screen time is the last thing I want him to have! I'm really struggling with this one and desperatly trying to think of a different gift that will make him happy. Any suggestions??

Even though we struggle now, I have no doubt that our values will sink into our kids. They may not appreciate it now but later they will understand.

I don’t have kids yet, but I agree with you. I was a kid once (gasp!) and I remember being tuned in to some of the commercials for toys and fast food; though I never really wanted what was on TV (maybe because my mother was always buying us something!) I think the obsession grew as I got older and started reading magazines. Those made a bigger impact on me and how I feel about myself and the things I wanted– going off topic here! I don’t watch network TV (except for the Olympics and some sports and I hit mute as soon as the screen fades to black and pick up a book) so I don’t have a good idea what’s being advertised these days but I’m sure its probably worse than when I was growing up.

I agree!!!! Thanks for being brave and posting in your PJ's. I actually blogged my dirty toilet the other day to show how you can clean with distilled white vinegar in place of chemicals. Go girl!
