The problem is that our landfills are designed to keep oxygen and water out in order to prevent the gross things that we put in them (like dog doo) from leaching into our water. However, this means that even disposable bags aren't really going to dispose, unless they are allowed to compost, which requires both moisture and oxygen. People have dug up 40 year old newspapers from landfills and could still read them perfectly... and paper decomposes super quickly. I don't have a perfect solution to give you, and biodegradeable bags are better than awful awful plastic, but it's not really an easy solution for the problem! mama gone green’s last blog post..Befriend a Bird!

you have to be careful with "biodegradable" dog waste bags. Some say they are biodegradable, but they don't actually biodegrade. Info here:

Biobags and poopbags.com are truly biodegradable and compostable, but there are many that aren't. Make sure you buy bags that are ASTM certified.

I think that Hartz’s bags are also made by BioBag–not entirely sure. But the BioBags are really a great product that all responsible dog-owners should be aware of. BioBag also makes kitchen bags, as well as some other items.

Hartz has a whole line of biodegradable & non-toxic pet products (including poo bags) available now. They’re called the Clean Earth line. This brand is available at Target (and I’m sure other local stores.)
