Earth Tales

Menu Planning Resource Pack

Earth TalesEarth Day matters to all of us and this week I’ve focused a lot on younger children, activities for them and books that are geared more for the early childhood age group. What about older children? Barefoot Books has us covered with this new book they are presenting called Earth Tales. A beautiful hard covered books that is full of gorgeous illustrations, folktales and cultural diversity exploring Australia, Nigeria, Southwest U.S., Bali, Kazakhstan, India and Wales.

What I love best about this book is that older children, 6-10 could easily read this alone or teachers and parents could use the nature activities in the book to do with a group or individual child. The book can also be read aloud to children ages 4-8 so it really is a book that covers many age groups. Besides being rich in culture the book celebrates Earth Day by drawing attention to living in harmony with nature. There are many eco-friendly tips and activities to use in the book for all months of the year, not just Earth Month.

For the month of April 2009 Barefoot Books and Eco-Libris are planting a tree for each copy of Earth Tales that is sold. Giving back to the Earth while teaching about living in harmony with it but in addition to all of this good news – Barefoot Books will also be giving away one copy to a lucky Green and Clean Mom reader! Enter “Thank You” at check out to get a 10% discount!

Congrats to MJ for winning this wonderful book!

I’ve been meaning to compile a list of all the things I do to conserve. Suffice it to say that I live with a constant mindfulness of resources and awareness which allows me to continuously come up with new ways to conserve.

    Some examples are:

reusing plastic produce bags (keep them stored in my reusable canvas bags in car, ready to go…use canvas bags for all purchases (though I’m an extremely minimal consumer!))

I use empty dry cat food bags to collect the dirty cat litter and don’t discard it until it is full. (This avoids using all those plastic bags!) Could also use empty cereal bags for this. Use cereal boxes to collect paper recyclables and then just put on curb for pick up…voila!…no recycle bin to carry out and retrieve. :)

I save disposable paper napkins whenever I get them and have used them lightly. I then keep them under the kitchen sink and use them to clean the floor of stains/spills. (We use cloth napkins, flat large sponges in place of paper towels, handkerchiefs instead of kleenex/tissues, old tee-shirts as rags, etc.). I also save plastic cutlery obtained/used when outside the home, wash them and keep them in the car to use on road trips.

Thanks for the chance to win!

Tales about Old Ireland is a great Barefoot Book we just read for St. Patrick’s Day!
We would love a chance to win a book that explores other cutures while focusing on our universal connection to the Earth and why we need to conserve!!!

Some things we have done to do our part:
We reduce our use of plastic and only use glass/stainless for eating and storing food. We turned down our thermostat this winter and started a compost.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

We do quite a bit to conserve. We really limit our use of water. We have a low flow well, and have to space out our water use to prevent from draining the well. So we do not shower every day, laundry is done once a week..etc. We are extremely conscious of our water use. We also have rain barrel to collect rain water for watering the gardens and house plants.
We work from home, and only drive into town once a week, every other week. We rarely buy new…we are big fans of thrift stores and garage sales!

It is so hard to choose just one. I like Herb, The Vegitarian Dragon, African Animals and Whole World Fun Eco Activities. Not only do we recycle and compost our garbage but we use old newspaper and phone books to create new things. We make art, bowls, animals …. Imagination is the mother of creation!

As for posting, I will be emailing this giveaway to everyone I know as well as posting to my blog.
