KIBERA SLUM, NAIROBI, KENYA - DECEMBER 2006: Rights workshops and self-empowerment classes for young women and girls in the sprawling Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya December 2006. These young women have very little protection and even less awareness of their rights as women. These classes are women teaching women about their bodies, their right to say no, how to avoid dangerous situations, AIDS, safe sex education and financial empowerment through savings workshops. HIV rates in Kenya are now at 5 to 1 in terms of women to men, indicating a strong feminisation of the disease. As a result, groups of Kenyan HIV positive women are banding together to offer each other education and support. I am the type of person who loves a good deal, enjoys my sisters hand-me-downs, and love the treasures my mother in law finds me at the Goodwill. I try to be as financially and environmentally responsible as I can when shopping. Now having said that it’s a little harder to do when purchasing someone a gift; most people don’t appreciate gifts from the Goodwill or from my hand-me-down drawer. I have found the perfect solution and want to share it with our readers.

There is a great site called Global Girlfriend which I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know about until now. The website was started by a true humanitarian; Stacy Edgar. Stacey used her background and experience in social work to start Global Girlfriend as a way to provide economic security for women in need. Considering I work in a similar line of work I understand it can be an emotionally straining and upsetting job at times. It’s heart wrenching to see people living in squallier and not be able to save them all. I commend Stacey for her hard work and devotion to taking action and saving as many as she can.

Now to get down to the nitty gritty, the site is an online store that provides handmade, unique, women made, fair trade, eco-friendly products. Global Girlfriend directs the charity royalty from each purchase to Camfed (Campaign for Female Education), a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating poverty in Africa through the education of girls.

If you are looking through their unique boutique of eco friendly, woman made products you can support in other ways. Global Girlfriend also operates a suite of Click To Givetm sites. Those sites include The Hunger Site, The Breast Cancer Site, The Child Health Site, The Literacy Site, The Rainforest Site, and The Animal Rescue Site.

Buy a gift guilt free and help other eco conscious hard working woman like yourself.
