Horizon Organic milk company is misleading consumers and dealing unethically with producers. They claim to get their milk from small, family-owned farms when they are actually driving these exact farms out of business. Horizon is not honoring contracts with small farmers, but instead getting their milk from their OWN company mega-dairy. They are misleading consumers by stating, on their website and in their literature, that they are comprised of small family dairies, when in fact, much of their milk comes from dairies with more than 500 cows.

One dairyman, Mr. Don Halverson, the owner of a small 50-cow dairy in Idaho, has shared his story of Horizon committing verbally to take his milk once he completed the expensive organic certification process, only to refuse to honor that agreement after he'd invested the thousands of dollars and time required.
I've always heard that Horizon doesn't have "happy cows" and that their milk production process, though organic, is as factory farm as ever. I would sure like more information about this company, but not from their own website!

My family is yet to make the switch to organic milk.

There is also the issue that Horizon has been lobbying to loosen the organic standards. We try to buy other brand if at all possible.

A while back I posted something on the Green Baby Guide about choosing local milk over organic milk. The best of both worlds would be local organic milk, but that wasn't an option for me at the time. I figured supporting a local dairy that didn't use hormones would be better for the environment than spending money on organic milk that came from a distant state. Now I am lucky because there are a couple local organic dairies where I live, so I don't have to choose!

But there are conflicting accounts of how "organic" Horizon is. Their claims that there are no antibiotics in their milk is misleading at best. The USDA requires dairies to test milk to guarantee that there are no antibiotics in it. Even from cows who receive antibiotics. Plus the UHT process kills pretty much anything good in milk other than the calcium. Personally, if we had to use a UHT milk, I would choose Organic Valley over Horizon.
