I agree, technology makes life easier but unplugging is very important - something I have to do more often!

Rachel, it is very easy to get absorbed in a project but having priorities set is important. I had a co-worker tell me that on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the priority) that you can't always have family being 10 or work being 10, visa verse. You have to strike a balance and even things out if you want to be successful at both. There will be times when work is on top because of an assignment or something that comes up and then the next week there is a sick kid, parent teacher conferences, etc. What do you think of this idea?

I set limits for myself because I have a tendency to get so absorbed in one project that I forget another. I have young kids at home and we are homeschooling so my kids have to come first but I do have to reevaluate things and set myself back on track from time to time. I make my kids help around the house quite a bit and I delegate any blogging tasks that I don't love.

My wife and I were just talking about personality types. I too am an ENFP/ENTP (borderline between F and T). What I find amazing is that my eldest son is likely an ESFJ and we drive each other nuts! But that is the nature of our personality - doesn't change the love.

As for getting it all done: David Allen's Getting It Done is a great place to start. I do not start my day with email. I outsource the aspects of my life I do not like, and I purposefully schedule time to play with my kids - knowing that the time is the priority, not the spontaneity.

I also set a regular date night each week. It all keeps things balanced and moving in the right direction.

It's definitely a juggling act! Trying to work 8 hours in less than 6 while kids are at school is weary at times. But I love picking them up at 3p and shutting down for a few hours. Thanks to technology we can still squeeze in more while waiting in carpool or during an activity. I'm more of an ENFP - which probably explains my frustration in the corporate world! I need flexibility! Thanks!
