It's not very safe w/o the sleeve! Broke as easily as a drinking glass, also. It sounds like you may want to go with a reusable BPA-free plastic bottle. Our two favorites in that category are the 16oz CamelBak with bite valve (http://www.thesoftlanding.com/camelbak16oz-bett…) and the 24oz Thermos Intak (http://www.thesoftlanding.com/thermos-intak-hyd…).

Both are on sale for a few more days and are very affordable even at regular price.
