I try to buy clothes that don’t require dry cleaning as often as possible, but I sometimes can’t avoid it. I’ve only recently heard about these, and I think it’s a great way to personally help fight the amount of plastic out there. One type of bag I have seen a lot of is The Green Garmento bags. After digging around, I found that you can get a set of 2 bags from http://www.greenhome.com/ for under $20!

Hi there,

Thanks for this great post!

I recently did a product review on the Green Garmento, an eco-friendly dry cleaning bag, which you can find here: http://www.thegreenestdollar.com/?p=572

What's cool is that this company is trying to market them to the dry cleaners themselves, in the hopes that they'll start using these bags instead of giving out plastic ones. I thought that was a great way to approach the problem.

Anyway, the company is giving out free bags (you have to pay for shipping) if you head over to their site and sign up.

Thanks for drawing attention to this problem!

Although it's a great idea to use reusable bags in any circumstance, it is kind of a contradiction to use them for dry cleaning if you are 'green'. The chemicals in dry cleaning are some of the very worst out there. They are extremely harmful to breathe in, especially for children. Please consider this before dry cleaning anything. This is what lesstoxic.ca says:

"Conventional dry cleaning fluids contain highly toxic chemicals including tetrochloroethylene (perchloroethylene), a carcinogen, central nervous system toxicant, and respiratory irritant, naphthalene, a suspected carcinogen and reproductive toxin, toluene which may cause damage to a developing fetus and is neurotoxic, and xylene, a neurotoxin. They also contain benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene, all of which are carcinogenic. Many of these substances are also known to cause liver and kidney damage. The US Environmental Protection Agency has noted that fumes from slightly damp dry cleaned clothing are a common indoor air pollutant. Exposure to these chemicals occurs as they evaporate from clothing into indoor air, and when contact is made with skin. Dry cleaning fluid has a half life of 40 days. Water process dry cleaning is an excellent alternative. "

That is a great idea. Thanks for the tip. Not much dry cleaning for me now that I work from home. With spring near I am sure to make a few stops then.
:)
