The Year I Killed Christmas

Bah! Humbug! Apparently “green” consumers, supporters, environmentalist, lobbyist, etc…are ruining Christmas this year. Ms. Finley, an assistant editor, for the Wall Street Journal wrote due to the CPSIA crusade against chemicals, especially phthalates, a “chemical free” world is being imposed on people and ruining Christmas. According to her article the GoodWill and Salvation Army had to discard of $100 million dollars worth of merchandise this year. Ms. Finley further reports that the discarded gifts “will never warm the hearts of poor children whose parents can’t afford new toys”.

I think it is a vacuous remark. Impoverished families and children deserve the same opportunities to live a chemical free and safe existence as those that are not as financially barren. Phthalates are linked to infertility, cancer, allergies, premature puberty and a myriad of other health risks. Why should a child who has already suffered the financial injustices of society be subjected to a life of possible health complications? Isn’t that setting them up for failure? Once again the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I am willing to be a Christmas killer or a scrooge if it’s going to benefit the health and safety of others.

Bah! Humbug!
