I tried Stevia but found it leaves a weird after-taste. Another two sweetner options available in health stores are Xylitol and Agave Nectar. I have Xylitol in coffee and Agave Nectar in green tea. I think you can use Xylitol for baking too because there are some really yummy cookies made with xylitol called Kookie Karma - also available at health stores. My favourite is the chocolate chip.

@Allison - I also love heavy whipping cream in my coffee and as long as I stay on a relatively low carb diet I can have it an still lose weight. The great thing about lower carb is you don't have to worry so much about the fats.

Stevia is definately a good alternative. I'm looking into buying some plants for my garden, although I'm still not sure how I'd process it for use in my coffee....hmmm, new research project!

Love, love, love stevia, and I actually just found Truvia at my supermarket - it's like Splenda but derived from stevia. Makes me feel much better about using a non-sugar sweetener...

I've only tried it in my coffee, but I love it and might secretly put it something cookie-related this week for my kids to try :)

There is a cool diet that helps so many ailments and one of the main things that is recommended is the use of stevia. My family did the diet for several years to help with gut issues (autism among others) and stevia was a crucial part of the diet. Check it out www.bodyecologydiet.com

Thanks for bringing this up! I just started reading your blog and it's great. Have you read Sugar Blues? We consume far too much of it here in the US - I write as I crave chocolate peanut butter ice cream!

I use the toffee Stevia in french toast. Yum! I'll talk about it on my show too. I'm doing an online comedy cooking show where I share info like this in hilarious ways so I don't get shot talking about things like Monsanto.

Thanks for being a Green Mom! I'm also Safe Side Superchick. If you have seen Baby Einstein, it is Julie Clark's new endeavor. Kids watch it over and over again and don't feed them sugar!

Hooray for Stevia! Don't forget to check for the liquid stevia - in many flavors - chocolate, cinnamon, apricot, english toffee, vanilla creme, grape, peppermint, even root beer.

I have only tried the Sweet Leaf brand, but there may be others. Happy sampling!

the sad thing is even if they actually admitted that stevia IS better and put it with the other sweetners, people would still buy the bad stuff. it's addicting and weirdly, people feel better using something that's been around. i am realizing more and more that people don't do research, they just trust our fda. i am a recovering "artificial sweetner-ic". the years of that stuff messed me up and when i decided to rid it out of my life...it was hell for along time. there is such a difference in my body and mind now. my body was addicted to the stuff. i thought it was the caffiene. anyway, i am happy for you to have found stevia.
