We feed our shih tzu and yorkie Canidae dry dog food. It's one of those nice healthy brands and the kibbles are small. It's a little more expensive but it's worth it. I was looking for a new brand a few years ago because my shih tzu got a reaccuring skin allergy that made her smell a bit like fish. (blah!) Thanks to Canidae she no longer has the issue.

We tried making food once and it worked pretty well - at least the cooking and eating part. But even though I transitioned the little buggers from kibble to real food slowly, their systems just couldn't handle it. We have boxers and they are notorious for this, so we've stuck with dog food.

Now we just give them some good table scraps (eggs, brown rice, raw fruit and veggies) and a TBSP of olive oil on their food several times a week. They like the olive oil more than ice cream.

My dog has corn and wheat allergies, which is in just about every dog food and treat out there, from the supermarket junk food brands to the premium pet food brands that use all natural ingredients, etc. I feed Blitzkrieg California Natural Sweet Potato and Herring. It's made from human grade grown in the USA ingredients. I have a long haired dog and the fish oils make his coat look a lot better than the other dog foods I've tried. I've also heard good things about Wellnesss dog foods too. I've heard that Evo is making some dog sick (but the company isn't acknowledging it) so you might want to reconsider them until the company decides to retest their food. I also make a lot of my dog treats but by far Blitzkrieg's favorite treat is a tiny slice of carrot.

A nipping puppy tip: To teach your puppy that nipping is unacceptable in your house, the next time the puppy nips you, yip in a high pitched puppy yelp, "yiiiiip!", calmly walk away from the dog, and ignore him for a little bit. The puppy understands that the yip is painful to you (because that's how puppies tell each other that they are biting too hard) in "dog language". The walking calmly away and ignoring tells the dog that "if you do this unwanted behavior the fun/good stuff(pets, playtime whatever) STOPS."

We feed our animals Fromm and Stella and Chewy's, neither of which contain ingredients from China or anything unnatural (coloring, preservatives, etc), which is super important to us. I'd rather spend more on food than vet bills.

We would love to make more food for them, but right now it is not an option. The cats don't eat much other than their food and treats, but the pup can eat all kinds of things we can. Carrots are a good one, though can get a little messy if your pup isn't thorough with the crumb clean up. Most are :) We NEVER feed at our meal time or from our plate though. We don't want to develop bad begging habits.

I have a bunch of recipes, but never have the time :(
