Isn't it funny how we raise our defenses against one another? Like you said, we are all trying.

I find the same thing too when I talk about reducing toxic chemicals in the home - that somehow my choices mean that somebody else is doing a bad job parenting. Which is just silly! We are all in this together - trying to figure out how best to parent our children, how best to keep them safe, how best to raise them in to happy and healthy adults. It seems that instead of being angry with you, other parents should be questioning the safety of the products that we use and angry that the information is not readily available.

Sommer, I am sorry that you were criticized about your 4/1 post. I thought it was a creative way to make your point. I appreciate that you are an advocate for your kids and ALL kids in our country. Know you are appreciated--you're on of my favorite bloggers, for sure! :)

I'm very glad you wrote this entry. You know, in my experience of trying to advocate with fellow moms about breastfeeding, toxic products, and other things I'm passionate about (vegetarianism, co-sleeping, attachment parenting, cloth diapering), I find that you run into many moms who see people like you and me as a threat. We are doing something different than them and they might realize that we are doing the right thing and it makes them feel inadequate or that *we* believe that they are inadequate. It's like anything that challenges the norm--people want to 'fit in'. When I tell people I'm a vegetarian who doesn't by Johnsons, they tell me to take my iron pills and join a commune. They threaten to bathe my child in bubble bath and feed them steak--and laugh about it. But if you or I write a blog about safer choices, suddenly we've *offended* them somehow. There has always been double standards against people who might go against the norm or 'regular' society. Just know that you have friends--people who support you and agree with you, and feel sorry for the rest ;)
