As a parent, it’s your job to do everything you can to keep your kids happy, healthy, and safe. Though you’ll spend most of your energy (and money) on your kids, that doesn’t mean you should neglect your own health and only care for them. It’s just as important to show your kids how to live a healthy lifestyle by setting a positive example.
Hopefully these tips will help you both improve your own life and set a great healthy example for your kids.
Regularly working out
It’s nearly impossible to get in better shape without going to the gym. Regular exercise is perhaps the most important activity for any age group. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, being active helps control weight, strengthens muscles and bones, improves mental health, and even reduces risks of potentially life-threatening diseases. Start while they’re young and teach your kids an appreciation for exercise.
Participating in physical activities
Though going to the gym and exercising is essential, it’s unrealistic to think that your kids are only going to want to be active at the gym. If you’re truly trying to promote a healthy lifestyle for your kids, you should do your best to find a positive hobby that they will enjoy. For adults, that might mean jogging or joining a walking club. For kids, skateboarding is a great way to get outside and live a more active lifestyle. In the U.S., roughly 11 million people enjoy skateboarding on a regular basis.
As reported by the Health Fitness Revolution, skateboarding offers an abundance of health benefits in addition to simply being active, including improved flexibility, endurance, coordination, precision, and even burns calories. No matter what hobby speaks to you, it’s a great way to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle in your little ones.
Sticking to a healthy diet
No matter how active you and your children are, if you both eat poorly throughout the week, neither of you will enjoy any healthy results (especially you). Make sure that you show your kids from an early age that you are capable of sticking to and enjoying a healthy, nutrient-rich diet. Additionally, using and teaching your kids about dietary supplements will help promote a healthier lifestyle.
If you’re having trouble getting your kids to eat a healthy diet, then blending those green veggies into a tasty smoothie is a fun and healthy way to spend time with your kids.
“Both my husband and I typically add greens to our eggs (spinach, kale, Swiss chard, whatever is around) at breakfast,” said Pam Moore, mother and writer. “I always add greens to my smoothies. I often keep sliced veggies (bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers) washed, sliced and ready to eat for snacks.”
Additionally, Lori Day, an educational psychologist and consultant, states that the meals prepared in front of and for kids should be much more eccentric than conventional meals.
“My main tip is to make food interesting if your child is naturally curious, enjoys science/nature and is willing to engage,” said Day.
