I love the sunshine. Growing up, we never wore sunscreen. Now that I am 40, I can see the damage the sun has done to my skin. I have small age spots or “liver spots” on my skin in various sizes. I have them on my hands, arms, shoulders, and face. These spots are common and usually appear on the body where the sun’s rays often hit.
In addition to the small age spots on my face, I have melasma. It is much lighter than it used to be. After both of my pregnancies, melasma appeared on my upper lip and forehead. Over time, it has faded but with sun exposure, it is easily noticeable when I have no make-up on.
My son is going to be 14; this has been an ongoing struggle for me. Most people say I have a nice complexion but when I wash my face at night, I see the uneven skin tone and discoloration. As I age, I see the age spots, even with the makeup. To help even out my skin tone and improve the appearance of age spots, I have learned a few tricks that still allow me to enjoy the sunshine.
1. Wear a hat. If I am going to be in the sun, I wear a ball cap. Not only does this cover my boat or beach hair, it shades my face from the harmful rays that make my facial discoloration worse.
2. Sunscreen. This seems like a no brainer but most people actually skip their face when it comes to sunscreen. I like to wear a tinted sunscreen for my face that my dermatologist recommended.
3. Exfoliation. I exfoliate in the shower once each week. When you exfoliate, you shed the dead skin cells. The dead skin cells can clog your pores and make your skin tone uneven. After exfoliating, my skin has a new luster to it. I sometimes make my own exfoliating face scrub but my favorite product is the Now Solutions Nature’s Microdermabrasion made with volcanic sand. It is not too aggressive, it is paraben free and the added Vitamin C really helps to make my skin glow.
4. Dark Spot Serum. I literally never leave home without my bottle of Now Solutions Dark Spot Serum. Shucks, I took it to Ireland with me. Of all the products I have used over the years, I feel as though this has worked the very best. I use it morning and night and I can really see a difference in my skin tone. It was the 2018 Better Nutrition Magazine beauty winner and I can 100% understand why.
I hope that if you suffer as I do with facial discoloration, these tips and products can help you too.
