our future Einstein

I feel like a kid again!! I confess, I was planning on writing this post much sooner but every time I went to the SciGirls website I got hooked. First I went to the PBS website and then to SciGirls and well…. two days later I am writing this post. You will have to check it out yourself but basically SciGirls is a new show and website for kids 8-12 that showcases real tween girls putting science and engineering to work in their everyday lives. The website allows a sneak peek at a few of the episodes.

Each episode showcases a new set of middle school girls and there eagerness to find answers to their questions. The show also includes two animated characters that call on the SciGirls to help them out. The adventures/investigations range anywhere from how to find out if ocean reefs are healthy, how to make healthier recipes, population studies, projects to do at home, recycling, food science and a plethora of other options. The website also offers a safe social networking component, where girls can “friend” other girls with similar interest.

Don’t worry parents there are no pictures of your kids on the site. The kids pick and personalize their own avatar. The website also allows the kids to take polls and ask questions; It’s a great interactive way to get kids involved in science. There are so many projects and experiments that can be conducted right at home; It makes it a real hands on experience. The great part about the website is that they offer science tips to parents and teachers as well as fun backyard science projects. I wish they would have had this kind of stuff when I was a kid, maybe I would have liked school more. Well sorry to make this short but I am going to watch another SciGirls episode and cruise their website.
