Roll out the red carpet, it’s that time of year again. The Toxie Awards, an awards ceremony highlighting “bad actor chemicals.” The Toxies are proud to announce that this year they will have their first-ever People’s Choice Award. Please take a look at this year’s nominees and cast your vote! Some of the nominees include Bisphenol-A, Least Sexy Performance Dioxin, Worst Chemical Body Burden, Formaldehyde, Worst Hair-Raising Performance
Confused? Never heard of the Toxie Awards? It’s a fun way to get the word out about a not so fun topic, hazardous chemicals. The Toxie Awards educates the public on the hazards of specific chemicals – referred to by scientists for years as “bad actors” – and demonstrates how we can pull together as neighborhoods, workers, businesses and consumers to eliminate them from our lives.
The Toxie Awards want the public to be aware that every week, there is another study linking chemicals in our homes, schools, and workplaces to cancer, infertility, autism and developmental disorders, and more. Childhood cancers have increased 20% since 1975, and autism now is so prevalent that it is diagnosed in one out of every 110 children. The U.S. chemical regulatory system is broken and fails to protect people, wildlife and the environment from toxic chemical exposures. So the Toxie awards is here to educate the public, unveil this year’s nominees, and send actions to help retire them!
How are nominees picked? The kind of traits that make a chemical a “bad actor” include:
-Toxic or poisonous
-Changes genetic material
-Interferes with normal reproduction
-Disrupts the endocrine system (synthetic hormones)
-Causes serious eye damage
-Causes hyper-reaction in the airways
-Causes skin rashes or irritations
-Accumulates in the body
-Affects fish and other aquatic organisms
-Depletes the ozone layer
This is a serious topic but a fun way to get others involved and spread the word? You can watch the 2011 Toxies live! Host a Viewing Party and invite your friends and allies to see the awards as they happen. Follow them on twitter and facebook and of course VOTE!!
