It’s no secret, I’m 40. I avoided my annual check-up like the plague. I knew my weight was out of check and probably my cholesterol. I was right on the money. I need to lose 20 pounds, exercise more and eat power foods to lower my cholesterol. Good-bye fried foods.
Everything the doctor said to me, I knew. EXCEPT, that my vitamin D levels were next to zero!
Say what? Huh?
Besides being talked to about my weight and out of control cholesterol levels, I received a lesson on the importance of vitamin D and strict instructions to take 1,000 IU of Vitamin D-3 each day. No excuses.
Why I take Vitamin D
- The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Calcium is needed for strong bones. I am getting older and I cannot break a hip peeps.
- Being deficient in vitamin D could be linked to my weight gain, depression and other problems. So essentially increasing my levels could help me feel better and lower my risks of some diseases or illnesses. However, a report in Time Magazine suggests otherwise and recommends 600 IU. This is why before you start taking a supplement; you should talk to your doctor. More is not always better.
- Some research says that vitamin D also helps with cardiovascular function and a healthy immune system. Is this true, I’m not sure but I figure if my doctor says I should take the supplement and it could help keep my ticker ticking and me healthy, it’s worth taking.
If your sunlight exposure is limited and you are concerned you have a vitamin D deficiency, talk to your doctor. It might be worth the discussion and blood test. Regardless, talk to your doctor before taking any supplements.
